Last weekend the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust’s annual Paddle Day and litter pick was blessed with excellent weather and we a lot of help from about twenty scouts from the 1st Lilleshall and Muxton Scout Troop – many thanks to Councillor Peter Scott for the loan of his litter pickers which were invaluable.
On the water our team of three canoes were able to get to a lot of rubbish that had been thrown in the canal including remarkable quantity of cans and bottles. Indeed, one canoe did not manage to even get to the last canal section as they got involved in clearing rubbish from the off-side then helped to remove a very large branch that was half submerged in the canal and which then needed sawing up into manageable sections.
Very many thanks are due to the scouts, who proved their worth by competitively filling a lot of bags with all sorts of rubbish, delving behind hedges and checking all the obscure corners that they could find.
The event was extremely well organised by member Barry Witts and it was very worthwhile when we saw the small mountain of bags of litter that had been collected. We had permission from Telford & Wrekin Council and from Natural England for more boats to take part, so next year it would be good if more people would like to get involved. Come on all you prospective boaters, here is a chance to actually get onto the water on one of the canals we are trying to restore.
