Budding Botanists Nurtured by Newport Show

Author | 24 May 2018

Nature has been at the top of the timetable for students who have taken part in a series of special workshops organised by the team behind Newport Show.

More than 450 children from Newport Junior School, St Peter’s Edgmond, St Peter’s and St Paul’s, Castle House, and Moorfield School in Newport and Lilleshall School, took part in the Spring Explorer days hosted by the Newport & District Agricultural Society this month.

During the two-hour education workshops at the Chetwynd Deer Park, they enjoyed a woodland bug hunt, tried their hand at pond dipping, visited lambs and learned how to identify birds and flowers.

Led by the Park Warden Fred Fallows, show staff Sally Western, Erika Sadler and society volunteers, the eight and nine-year-olds also experienced nature filled sensory boxes as part of the activity programme. Retired vet Chris Edwards also guided them through a fun study on ticks and insects.

It was the second year the Society had run the Spring Explorer initiative and show manager Sally Western said it had been another great success.

She said: “The Chetwynd Deer Park is a beautiful conservation area with endless opportunities to stimulate the children’s interest in, and observation of, the natural environment.

“The sessions were designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the environment around them and they really enjoyed the activities that taught them important lessons in a fun way.”

The Society organises the annual one-day show that will take place at the Chetwynd Deer Park on July 14.

The show includes a Festival of Food with star guest the Great British Bake Off runner up Steven Carter-Bailey, more than 140 livestock classes, sheep and equine classes, an open dog show with Crufts qualifying classes, main ring entertainment, Education Hub, live music, countryside retail village, family entertainment, vintage vehicle and machinery displays, trade stands, handicraft and horticulture competitions, and a fairground.
