UK First for Marlboro Exhibition at Weston Park

Author | 29 June 2018

The Granary Art Gallery at Weston Park on the Shropshire \ Staffordshire border is hosting an exhibition of a rare set of photographs taken by German photographer Dieter Blum as part of the iconic Marlboro advertising campaign from the early 1990’s throughout the summer.

Dieter Blum’s images on the theme of the Cowboy emerged in 1992 in the context of the famous Marlboro advertising campaign. Blum was invited to the USA by Philip Morris to produce a series of trial shoots and from 1994 onwards he went on to produce the iconic imagery for the brand until 1994.

The trial shoots that Blum produced remained forgotten for almost 25 years and were never published or exhibited. They are generously on loan from the Daimler Art Collection to the Weston Park Foundation and this is the first time they have been exhibited in the UK.

These behind the scenes shots show the daily life of the cowboy which was a highly unusual and novel approach at the time, putting the everyday world of the men working as cowboys at the heart.

Gareth Williams, Curator and Head of Learning comments: “We are delighted to be hosting this fantastic exhibition that has travelled from Germany to be here this summer. Vast architectural changes have taken place in the Granary Art Gallery to accommodate the show of strikingly large prints which truly are mesmerising.”

The prints resonate at Weston Park, with a large amount of the Art Collection in the House being dedicated to equestrian art.

The show ‘Cowboys. The First Shooting’ will be on display throughout July and August in the Granary Art Gallery at Weston Park.

The Granary Art Gallery is open every day from 11am – 4pm and is free to enter.
