Here in the UK, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. That puts Breast cancer as the most common cancer in women in the UK.

Wear Pink this October. On Friday 24th October, the biggest pink event in the UK gets a fashion makeover, making it easier than ever before to get involved. You can choose from hundreds of fun and fashionable ways to wear it pink in the office, at home or at school while raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign to fund life-saving breast cancer research here in the UK.
Breast Cancer Campaign’s Wear it Pink is now in its 13th year, and continues to raise over £2 million every year for world-class breast cancer research that saves and improves lives, giving women quicker diagnosis and more effective treatments.
They report ‘Every year 50,000 mothers, daughters, sisters and wives will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer and 12,000 women still die, with millions continuing to live with its long term impact.’
TV presenter and Breast Cancer Campaign supporter Zoe Hardman, who is taking part in this year’s event, said: “There are lots of different ways in which you can get involved and wear it pink. The high street is full of so many great pink clothes and accessories at the moment making it easy for everyone to wear something pink and look stylish, while doing your bit for charity” Zoe added that, “Ladies can wear a pink statement necklace or a gorgeous pair of heels, and gents, don’t forget you can wear it pink too. A pink tie, cufflinks or bright pink socks are the perfect addition to a slick suit!”
More details on Breast Cancer Campaign’s ‘Wear it Pink’ day and their life saving research are available from www.breastcancercampaign.org. A free magazine is also available from the website wearitpink.org.
Cancer Research UK inform us that here in the UK, every woman between the ages of 50 and 70 is invited for a mammogram every 3 years as part of the UK NHS breast cancer screening programme. In England, the screening programme is currently extending the age range for breast screening from 47 to 73. For women older than 70, they have the option to carry on having screening every 3 years.
Even with this breast screening programme, many breast tumours are first spotted by women themselves which “may be because the woman is too young to have started screening, or it may be because she stopped having screening when she reached the age of 70, or it could be that a breast cancer starts to cause symptoms between mammograms, which is known as an interval cancer.”
However it is found, the earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of a cure.
