Making ‘Destination Newport’ a reality

The Trust 'is working towards restoring the Newport Canal from the length in water, here at Meretown Lock, across the A41 to Norbury Junction' says John Myers of the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust. On the section from the lock to the A41, they are preparing the canal for re-watering. They have taken down the trees which were taking over the dry canal bed, including many that were dead and dangerous. The towpath has also been cleared to make it safer. The next plan is to remove any dead trees from the hedge next to the towpath, plant new trees to fill in the gaps and lay the hedge a section at a time, thereby making it stronger and providing a better habitat for wildlife. A new water supply pipe has been installed to pump water from the Strine Brook to re-water the section. In the next couple of years there are plans to lower the level of the canal bed to that of the length in water on the Newport side of the lock, subject to obtaining planning permission. Meretown Lock would not then be necessary, with a new ‘Fall and Rise’ lock being installed to get under the A41. This would also incorporate a towpath under the road, making it a much safer crossing for walkers and cyclists. The plan is to re-water the canal on the other side of the A41 eventually to Norbury Junction. This will make our ‘Destination Newport’ project, from Norbury to Newport, a reality.
