Newport’s Best Kept Secret

Author | 04 February 2015

Mixed Media/Textile Artist and Gallery Owner, Maggie Hollinshead shares her week between her Studio in Staffordshire and her Gallery in Newport. The Coachman’s House Gallery just off New Street Car Park close to the High Street is located in a charming 16th Century building which was once home to the local Coachman and his entire family. The Gallery showcases work from British Designer/Makers and Artists, some of them local, but not all.

Recently Maggie has been concentrating more on her own art work and this is sure to have a greater presence at the Gallery over the coming months. Complimenting the high quality hand produced studio pottery, jewellery, glass, textiles and cards there are small pieces of vintage furniture and decorative pieces.

The Coachman’s House has been one of Newport’s gems for the past thirteen years and some still refer to it as Newport’s Best Kept Secret, but Maggie’s Gallery has a firm following of loyal customers who come back time and time again for an unusual gift or maybe something for themselves, some travelling quite a distance to enjoy the Gallery and Newport’s independent shops and, of course, Waitrose, which is always popular. “Happy customers recommend us to their family and friends” says Maggie “and often they bring visitors who buy gifts to take home too, after a morning or afternoon in Newport with lunch or afternoon tea.

Maggie is also an active member of WiRE, Women in Rural Enterprise, which is based locally at Harper Adams University College, but is a nationwide organisation supporting rural business women. Maggie is a Volunteer Network Leader, “it’s great to support other business women and put something back.

Over the past twelve years, I have made some amazing friends and business connections through my association with WiRE, I would recommend joining to any woman running her own business or planning to do so.”

Maggie also runs Creative Workshops both at her Studio and at the Gallery and as a Mentor shares her years of experience to help creatives by inspiring and helping them plan where they are going with their own ideas. Contact Maggie about the Gallery and future Exhibition/Workshops or to enquire about WiRE Network Meetings or Mentoring Session. Note that there is funding to enable Mentoring Sessions to be provided fee free! What are you waiting for?
