Newport’s Jeggo family is synonymous with cycling. The contribution made to the sport by Mick and son Nick over the years is immeasurable. It would be fair to say the Jeggos have dedicated their lives to keeping the community in the saddle for decades.
Nick, who is chairman of Newport Cycling Club, helps to promote what has become one of the town’s best attended events - Newport Nocturne. The biennial floodlit street race draws thousands of folk onto the High Street. It returns in 2016, but fear not, for Nick is involved in another major event this year.
Taking place at Blists Hill Victorian Town, in historic Ironbridge Gorge, the Queen Victoria Cyclocross makes a welcome return on June 27.
Again, this is an evening event and has swiftly become a favourite on the cyclocross calendar, with competitors and spectators traveling from all over the country. Newport Cycling Club continues to thrive, with more than 170 members ranging in age from three years old to 76.
The club caters for a variety of abilities and is involved in road racing, track, cyclocross, mountain biking and time trialing. All-girl cycle rides have become popular in recent times too. Nick is also proud of the highly accredited kids coaching courses that take place at Burton Borough School.
