Three lucky boys

Author | 13 March 2015

Brian Hatton and his wife, Barbara, whose charity work takes them to Africa on behalf of Greenfields Africa, working tirelessly to eradicate jiggers, the plight of many children in the Kenyan rain forest. Brian is hugely instrumental in the organisation of NEWfest, Newport’s own one day music festival.

Three lucky boys, Justus, Cleophas and Joseph (pictured right), pupils of Ischeno Primary School in the Kakamega rain forest in Kenya were unable to walk 6 months ago due to their feet being infected by jiggers. Jiggers are sand fleas that bore into children’s feet and eat away the living flesh.

Very painful and very dangerous – complications can lead to loss of toes, club foot and gangrene. These boys were treated by volunteer teams operated by Shropshire Charity organisation, Greenfields Africa.

As you can see these boys have been given back their childhood. They can walk, run and join in activities, just as all children should. These three have been accepted into the Ambassadors Football Club and have just been presented with football boots which were collected in Newport. They are looking at the picture of the Nova under tens football team in the January issue of All About Magazine.

Greenfields Africa raises funds for this important work through Newfest, which this year will be held on 20th June at the Rugby Club, Forton Road with one of the top AC/DC tribute bands, Hells Bells, headlining.
