The first phase of building work is set to begin on Telford & Wrekin Council’s £56m housing investment programme. The programme will see up to 425 houses and apartments built across seven brownfield sites in the borough.
The homes will be rented to private tenants at market prices and will generate income for the Council – with 17 per cent of the homes being affordable rent. Earlier this month the first sites were cleared, ready for work to now begin on the development of the former Woodlands Primary site and Randlay Pool car park.
The first phase of housing is expected to be ready to let by winter 2015.
Phase Two will include housing projects at Madeley Court, Newport, Woodside and Malinslee. In addition, the programme will see the delivery of commercial units for shops, bars and restaurants in Southwater and Madeley – building on the successful regeneration of these areas.
Councillor Bill McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Finance and Enterprise, said: "This scheme will deliver quality private rental and affordable rental homes in response to the borough’s projected housing needs and we’re pleased that work is now ready to begin".
"It is a major programme that will deliver jobs in retail and construction and generate income to boost the borough’s economy. We’re looking forward to the first phase being ready for people to rent later in the year."
