Celebrating 25 years of the 100 Club

Author | 12 May 2015

The Severn Hospice - originally called the Shropshire & Mid-Wales Hospice - first opened its doors at Bicton Heath in Shrewsbury in 1989. However, local Support Groups began fund-raising in earnest years before then, with the Newport Support Group becoming established in 1987.

Newport Support Group was very successful under the leadership of Anne Crouch and Barbara Smedley, who are sadly no longer with us. And in 1989, committee members Derek Crouch and Mark Wiggin began the Newport Support Group 100 Club. The 100 Club is still going strong, and celebrated its 25th Anniversary earlier this year.

The idea is very simple. Members pay an annual subscription of just £12 each year, and then prizes of £20, £15 and £10 are drawn on the first Saturday of each month, with further bonus prizes of £100 and £20 for the December draw.

And in case you were wondering, it‘s called a ‘100 Club‘ because we aim to have around 100 members each year. This enables the group to be able to give £900 (some years £1,000 or more) to the Hospice each year, so since the 100 Club began, we have raised in the region of £25,000.

Each January, we hold a fund-raising coffee morning at the Cosy Hall. This year, being the 25th Anniversary, local business The Cake Academy baked two cakes for the event, one of which was donated to the Hospice for the benefit of patients.

Norma Ross, Appeals Director for the Severn Hospice spoke of the tremendous support given by the people of Newport to the Hospice over the years. She thanked the Newport Support Group for the funds raised by supporters in Newport and the surrounding areas.

Norma also also thanked all the volunteers at the Newport Hospice Shop and pointed out that the shop in Newport had been the very first of the networks of shops to open. Since the Hospice first opened, over 23,000 people have been cared for. And with running costs of £9 million annually - that‘s £25,000 each day - fund-raising is vitally important.
