Newport Pupils Return from Italian Cultural Exchange

Newport Pupils Return from Cultural Exchange

Author | 29 June 2015

On 20th May, 17 very excited pupils from SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Primary School left Newport for a five day cultural exchange to Italy.

A partnership with a primary school in Ravine-Lago in the province of Treviso, northern Italy, has been flourishing for the last 22 years and we have taken it in turns to visit each other’s country. Children stay in pairs with Italian host families and enjoy the experiences of Italian family life.

Thursday morning was spent in school, an 8am start! Working collaboratively on regional geographical topics before an extremely thought provoking visit to a First World War British cemetery in Tezze, where 355 British soldiers are buried. The ‘Alpini de Lago’ - a similar group to the British Legion - explained the significance of the battle. A wreath was laid in memoriam and pupils placed crosses on many graves. The local pizzeria by the beautiful lake in Revine, Lago was our venue for dinner: an opportunity to practise our Italian.

Our hosts kept us busy and entertained throughout. The Po Delta, an area of outstanding natural flora and fauna and also where rice is grown was Friday’s treat, whilst Saturday centred around being together with respective host families: playing, art activities, shopping, swimming, eating and exploring. Enthusiastically on Sunday morning we boarded a train to Venice. We were guided expertly through the narrow streets by a retired ‘Gondolier’ who knew every nook and cranny. With shopping for souvenirs done, photos taken in St Mark’s square, the beautiful Grand Canal and many places in between, it was time for a much needed ‘gelato’!

Alas, Monday morning arrived too quickly and it was soon time to say arrivederci! It was a wonderful experience and we look forward to our Italian friends visiting us in 2016.
