Royal Naval Association in Newport

Author | 30 November 2015

The first ever meeting of the Royal Naval Association in Newport took place on Wednesday 2nd August 1978 at the Star Inn (now Jaspers).

It was the start of a long and fruitful association for both the Town and the branch members. The motto of the RNA is Unity, Loyalty, Patriotism and Comradeship. Newport, at that time, was rife with old sailors and it wasn’t too difficult to draw them together. Within a few months the Branch was 40 strong and growing. So started the long search for a permanent home, moving around the Town for several years until the old bakery, latterly used by Woolworths as a storage area, in Bellmans Yard, became free and the deal was done.

A lot of hard work by a group of real stalwarts ensued and although not yet fully complete, on December 21st 1985, with typical Naval tenacity, a barrel of beer and a pump found their way into the half completed bar and a impromptu Christmas party heralded the first of many more in the RNA Club. That club has moved through the years with varying degrees of success. From a club with just short of 50 ex serving members of the Royal Navy to the present day when there are just twelve, it’s financial position has been equally variable.

Today, with a new lease of life, and a lot of hard work, ‘The Navy’ is making the running in providing a focal point for Live Music through their ‘Open Mic’ nights every Tuesday. It’s not just about music though, Newport Bridge Club are homed there, alongside Pool and Domino teams. Bingo every Thursday and our club night on Saturdays bring in some of the very best in live entertainment.

Far from a fading light, The Royal Naval Association Club in Newport continues to shine and is very proud to celebrate it’s 30th Anniversary with all the people of our home town of Newport.
