Hundreds of youngsters descended on Newport Rugby Club to take part in tag rugby competitions for primary schools across Telford & Wrekin.
The club hosted two separate challenges - one for pupils in years three and four, and another forthose in years five and six. In total, the two events involved 33 teams.
It was Tibberton Primary School which won the year three and four competition, with the team topping their initial qualifying group and going on to complete the competition undefeated.
The year five and six competition went down to the wire, with St Peter’s Primary at Edgmond beating Muxton Primary 10-9 on a ‘golden try’ after the teams had finished tied in the final at the end of normal time.
A total of 14 schools took part in the year three and four competition – including three newcomers - Woodlands, Hadley and Windmill schools. A further 19 schools were involved in the year five and six competition, which involved more than 200 pupils.
In the plate competition, for teams which failed to qualify from the initial group stages in the year five and six competition, St Peter & Paul Primary from Newport beat Short Wood of Wellington in the final, with John Fletcher andCoalbrookdale finishing joint third.
Refereeing was provided by volunteers from Newport Rugby Club and young leaders from the Burton Borough and Charlton Schools. Wrekin College also helped with the years five and six event.
