A 12-year-old Tibberton swimmer reeled in 17 county medals and a dozen regional qualifying times to set a new benchmark at her school.

Harriet Smith produced powerful performances at the Shropshire ASA championships to capture the top podium slot for Wrekin College SC in three events, before adding 14 silver medals to her tally. The talented youngster, who also competes for Market Drayton SC, was rewarded for her efforts by becoming the most successful junior swimmer in the history of Stafford Grammar School.

Harriet touched first in the under-12 girls’ 50m and 200m butterfly races at Wolverhampton Central Baths, before winning the 400m individual medley title.  She also brought home 14 silver medals, finishing runner-up in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m individual medley.

The Stafford Grammar pupil netted 12 regional qualifying times in the process, to book a place in the West Midlands Age Group Championships at Coventry in May.

“Harriet is hugely talented in all strokes and all distances. I have not known a lower school swimmer at SGS achieve so many medals and Midland qualifying times at the county championships before.”

“She’s earned the chance to compete against other top swimmers across the region and will now be aiming for more personal best times, so that she can move up the national rankings,” said the school’s swimming co-ordinator, Anne Saxon.
