Leon was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) Spastic Diplegia when he was 16 months old after failing to meet the normal physical developmental milestones.

He is now 3 years old and Leon can neither stand or walk unaided and he struggles to sit. Leon's family and friends are fundraising for him to have SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) surgery that will remove or reduce the spasticity in his legs so that he has the opportunity to walk and develop more typically to enjoy his childhood in the same way that his 7-month-old sister does. They hope that he will have the operation either before or when he is 5 years old.

The NHS do not routinely fund this procedure. A clinical trial has just ended in the UK and so the family's choices are to pay to go to St Louis in America who have helped over 3,000 children already or to fund it themselves in the UK. They would prefer to stay in the UK and so need to raise £60,000 to pay for Leon's surgery (Great Ormond Street Hospital in London do the procedure for £35,000), intensive recuperation, prolonged rehabilitation and post-operative equipment that he will need. Their friends and family are organising a number of events and challenges over the next 2 years to achieve this and since January this year they have already raised over £5,000.

InSpirit Hair Salon, Newport are holding a charity hair demonstration called Hair Through The Decades, 2pm on Saturday 21st May at Cosy Hall. Tickets are £7 or £10 for 2, on the door or from InSpirit in advance. There will be music, a hair and fashion demonstration, photographer, Stella & Dot jewellery, Ellen's Fingerprint Jewellery and dresses for sale. Please come and join the family and help raise money for Leon!

Fundraising is through Tree of Hope, a registered charity (no 1149254) who are securely holding all of Leon's funds and paying all invoices directly. Every bit of help, whether large or small, will take them one step closer to getting the surgery Leon so desperately needs. www.justgiving.com/leonsfirststeps
