Newport Show puts Children in the Picture

Children at eight Shropshire schools are being urged to get snap happy for the latest competition at Newport Show.

Organisers have invited pupils from eight schools to take part in photography workshops at the showground in Chetwynd Deer Park on May 25th and 26th and June 8th and 9th.

They will get special coaching from expert photographers Mark Sisson and Peter Bosher at one of four three-hour sessions and get the opportunity to try out their new-found skills in the Deer Park.

Children can submit one image ahead of the show on July 9 with first, second and third prizes for being awarded to pupils from each school on the day of the event.

The schools that have been invited to take part are Moorfield, SS Peter & Paul, St Peter’s Edgmond, Newport Junior, Muxton, Tibberton, Lilleshall and Castle House.

Show Manager Clare Farrell said: “The workshops will include expert advice on the basics of how to hold and use a camera and composing a photograph.

“Children will then be accompanied into the glorious grounds we have at the Deer Park to put what they have learnt into action. They are given a couple of hours to use their new found skills and can then choose one image from those they have taken to submit to us.

“We are hoping the great landscape will inspire some future David Baileys and expect around 200 entries.”

All of the photographs will be displayed in the schools marquee on July 9 that will also feature music from school bands, the results of the show’s Kids Can Grow challenge and other activities.

Clare added: “The schools marquee is always bustling and provides a great focus for young people on the day of the show. Our local links are very important to us as a community show and we are really looking forward to seeing the results of another successful project with the schools that support us.”

Other activities at this year’s show will be a new Festival of Food including demonstrations from the winner of the Great British Bake Off Nadiya Hussain, livestock and equine competitions, craft fair, dog show, handicraft and horticulture competitions, and a wide range of trade stalls. There will also be family entertainment in the Village Green.
