Newport Show's charity collection to benefit farmers

Show's Charity to Benefit Farmers

Author | 20 June 2016

Farming families in need are set to get a helping hand from visitors to this year’s Newport Show.

Show President Martin Hall has organised an exit collection at the event at Chetwynd Deer Park on July 9 in aid of the Addington Fund.

All the money raised from donations taken on the gate as people leave will go to the charity that was set up in 2001.

It was launched as the Churches’ response to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. It provided cash grants to farmers whose businesses were affected by the epidemic that paralysed the farming industry and left many farmers in severe financial hardship.

Since 2001, the Addington Fund has supported more than 700 farming families in Shropshire with hardship grants totalling £342,000.

The fund now predominantly supports tenant farmers who stand to lose their home when they retire, through its Strategic Rural Housing Scheme. Beneficiaries have the chance to invest any savings they may have accrued over their farming years into their own home.

Mr Hall said: “I have a strong legacy in the agricultural industry having studied at what was the Harper Adams Agricultural College before working in Spain and the UK in farming for more than 30 years.

“I know how valuable the work of the Addington Fund is in supporting farmers and I hope visitors to the show dig deep and support the agricultural community.”

This year’s show features more than 100 livestock classes, a horse and dog show and new Festival of Food, featuring Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain, food and drink demonstrations, workshops for adults and children and a street food market.

There will also be family entertainment, vintage vehicle and machinery displays, live music, trade stands, antique stalls, schools marquee, handicraft and horticulture competitions, and fairground rides.

Tickets can be booked online at www.newportshow.co.uk or call 0845 467 1889. Membership packages that offer additional privileges are available on a first come first served basis from the show office.
