Local Breeze volunteers have got a bewitching ride planned for Halloween. They are inviting women cyclists to join them on a spooky ride to the Coffee Cup at Loynton for a cauldron of pumpkin soup.
The ride takes place on Saturday 29 October, starting and finishing from Newport and taking a ten mile trip through some of the ghostliest countryside in Shropshire and Staffordshire.
The Breeze Newport Shropshire group has been established just over a year and has this month been shortlisted for a prestigious community award in recognition of its success encouraging women into cycling. The non-competitive, sociable rides have become hugely popular in the area, drawing women from all over the Midlands.
Women starting pedalling on the local Breeze rides have gone on to become regular recreational cyclists or, in some cases, take up the sport seriously. In September Ellen Spencer took part in the 969-mile Deloitte Ride Across Britain, having taken up cycling with her first 10-mile Breeze ride in 2015. Afterwards, Ellen said that she had “Completed something I had only dreamed of and would have never have done if I hadn’t turned up to that Breeze ride last year.”
The Halloween Spooktacular ride is open to women cyclists of all abilities. Places are free but limited and need to be booked in advance. “We always promise to take the fear out of cycling but for our Halloween ride, things are going to get scary!” warned a ghoulish Breeze volunteer. “Jump on your bike or your broomstick and join us. Fancy dress encouraged but make sure your cloak won’t get caught in your chain!” Book your place on the ride.
