Our volunteers change children’s lives. At Beanstalk, we believe that life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves with confidence.
We recruit and train volunteer reading helpers to go into local schools and provide one –to –one support to children who are struggling with their reading.
Beanstalk, was founded in 1973 by Susan Belgrave MBE. Established in 1999, the Shropshire area office is one of 17 in the UK and currently provides 100 volunteers of all ages, supporting 300 children twice a week across the county.
John Orford a retired IT manager who joined Beanstalk in 2014 as a reading volunteer said: “My wife and I taught our own children and contributed to our grandchildren’s reading, so I knew the work I could do with youngsters who view it as their twice-weekly treat, would be very rewarding. And it is! If someone likes children and is looking for a challenge then I would wholeheartedly recommend becoming a reader helper.”
If you are looking for a very rewarding experience where you’ll have the opportunity to inspire a child, develop new skills, then becoming a Beanstalk reading helper is perfect for you. As a Beanstalk reading helper you’ll help a struggling child start a new chapter in their life by providing consistent and individual literacy support while inspiring them to reach their true potential. In our recent survey, 90% of our volunteers would recommend this volunteering experience to their friends.
We need more reading helpers and would love to hear from you, if you’re able to offer this support to children who need it.
We particularly have young people 11-14yrs waiting in Newport, but would love to hear from you in any area of Shropshire.
