We are celebrating news of a £7895 grant from Sport England to support growth of the sport in the area.
The grant has been awarded to Newport Shropshire Cycling Club, recognising the extraordinary success of the Club’s coaching for children and junior cyclists. It was announced at the Club’s AGM on Monday 9 January.
The funding will support the purchase of new equipment for Bike Club, which provides coaching and development for local cyclists aged 5-16. Hundreds of young cyclists have now benefited from Bike Club, gaining confidence, learning to ride safely and improve their technique on two wheels. Many go on to more advanced coaching and even competitive riding.
“We will be using the grant to purchase turbo trainers and rollers to enable junior members to train during icy and bad weather,” said club secretary Dan Braddock. “We will also be investing in equipment used in the training sessions at Burton Borough School and buying a small number of Cyclocross bikes to enable riders to compete at local events.”
The Club also plans to provide additional training for new and existing coaches. In addition to the Bike Club sessions, its team of qualified coaches and ride leaders support introductory training for adults as well as the hugely popular Breeze rides for women.
“We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant,” said Dan Braddock. “We are very fortunate in having access to safe, traffic-free facilities at Burton Borough and Lilleshall National Sports Centre and the new funding will ensure that Bike Club can continue to meet the rapid growth in interest in cycling among young people in this area.”
Bike Club coaching takes place at Burton Borough School on Saturday mornings between April and November. For details contact coaching@newportshorpshirecc.org.uk Breeze rides for women take place throughout the year with details available on the Breeze Newport Shropshire Facebook page.
