A young Newport artist has landed a top award for her portrait of two US band members set against a Prague cityscape.
Fifteen-year-old Amy Robinson captured the critics’ plaudits in the Rotary Club of Stafford Knot’s annual competition for her striking canvas painting called ‘Blurry Faces’.
The Stafford Grammar student was among more than 100 talented pupils from seven secondary schools who submitted a wide range of work for the competition, judged by five members of the Eccleshall-based Staffordshire Artists Co-operative.
United States musical duo, Twenty One Pilots, were the inspiration for Amy’s award winning piece, in which she combined her memories of a trip to Prague with images of the American musicians. Her work caught the eye of judges and earned first place in the canvas painting section for 14 - 16-year-olds.
“Twenty One Pilots are a band I listen to a lot and I managed to put them together to create a dramatic portrait. I was really surprised to win and I’m quite proud of what I’ve achieved, especially as it involves a band who are close to my heart,” she said.
The Stafford Grammar student, who hopes to study graphic design at university, received the thumbs up from the band last year when she posted a drawing of them on Instagram.
The submissions were divided into three age groups, with prizes given to the best entries and certificates awarded to highly commended pieces of art. Classmate Hattie Jones-Jenkins was named as the artist with most potential in the 14 to 16 age group for her multi-media piece, Butterflies, while Ellie Dudson and Amalia Phillips collected highly commended certificates.
