Newport could be completely transformed with new areas for shops, industry and housing under plans unveiled recently by Councillor Eric Carter, creating hundreds of local jobs.
This ground-breaking scheme, covers three large areas to cater for industry, shops (close to where a Morrisons supermarket is proposed) and it has been suggested homes could be built off Station Road where Sainsbury’s has been proposed to be built. There are also plans to include a retirement village.
Councillor Carter presented the masterplan to Newport Regeneration Partnership where members voted to back it. It will now be presented to Telford & Wrekin Council for their consideration. Councillor Carter said: "This is an economic area that we should be looking to develop. This could be very good for growth and jobs in Newport and it would also raise money for
Telford & Wrekin Council through housing growth and business". He went on to say "I have been talking to interested parties, household names, who may well be interested," he said, “There will be some exciting names coming forward.” The chairman of Newport Regeneration Partnership Roy Scammell, said: “This would create employment in the town, largely on brown field land where planning permissions have already been granted. He also said "The regeneration partnership is backing this 100 per cent."
The plans will now be put to Newport Town Council, Newport Chamber of Commerce and Newport Civic Society for discussion. Telford & Wrekin Council have said they will consider Councillor Carter’s plans.
