Newport comes out in support of Aldi

Author | 08 November 2013

Over 1,000 members of the local community have provided feedback on Aldi’s proposal for a new store on the former Focus DIY Unit, Audley Avenue of which 977 (94.4%) have given their support.

Aldi’s proposal has now been submitted to the local planning authority, Telford & Wrekin Council and the final plans have been shaped by the community’s feedback received during Aldi’s pre-application consultation, which included a public exhibition attended by 230 individuals.

A spokesperson for Aldi commented: “We’re delighted with the amount of interest local residents have shown in response to our proposal. To receive so much support is very encouraging for us.”

He continued: “Following the feedback received from local residents, we have worked to develop our plans for the site to ensure we can deliver a high-quality store which will regenerate this redundant site.”

Aldi is very encouraged that support has been received from the majority of respondents, particularly towards:

• Increasing local shopping choice
• Introduction of a discount food store
• Regeneration of a vacant brownfield site and local job creation

The feedback received to date is as follows:

• 977 (94.4%) support
• 14 (1.35%) of respondents expressed their support with reservations
• 17 (1.64%) gave non-committal feedback
• 27 (2.61%) object

Aldi’s submitted plans seek to regenerate the vacant site with a high-quality, carefully designed discount food store to serve Newport, whilst delivering multi-million pound investment to the area and creating up to 35 new jobs. The store would also contribute to the vitality of the area, by increasing local shopping choice and preventing people from having to travel out of the area to complete their shopping.

Aldi would like to encourage anyone who would like to find out more details about its proposal for Newport to contact the project’s freephone information line number on 0800 298 7040 or to visit Telford & Wrekin Council website - www.telford.gov.uk - to view the full planning application by quoting application reference: TWC/2013/0887.
