Campaign launched to encourage a healthier start to 2014

Author | 07 January 2014

Residents in Telford and Wrekin are being encouraged to get 2014 off to a healthy start by making a simple change to everyday snacks, drinks and meals.

Telford & Wrekin Council is supporting the launch of a major new Change4Life campaign, ‘Smart Swaps’, which calls on families to make one easy change this January – like swapping sugary drinks to sugar-free drinks, milk or water.

If cereal’s your breakfast of choice, try swapping from sugary cereals to plain porridge or whole wheat cereal biscuits and an average family could save up to 83 sugar cubes in January alone!

To help families make their swaps, children across Telford and Wrekin will be taking part in themed activities at primary schools, children’s centres, libraries and leisure centres.

Primary school children could win family passes for Telford Ice Rink and Ironbridge Gorge Museums by designing a ‘Smart Swaps’ poster, and younger children will have the chance to win a family pass for Soft Play at Telford Ice Rink in a ‘Smart Swaps’ colouring competition.

Those who sign up to the ‘Smart Swaps’ campaign online will receive a fantastic free Smart Swapper full of healthier swap and meal ideas, money-off vouchers and fridge magnets as well as emails and texts to give them support and tips throughout the month.

A free Smart Recipes app with tasty, quick and healthier meal ideas can also be downloaded from iTunes and GooglePlay.
