Aldi remain commited to Newport

Author | 04 February 2014

Aldi, the premium discount retailer, is proposing to introduce a new food store in Newport (on the site of the former Focus DIY unit) and has today confirmed that as part of its planning obligation it is proposing to deliver benefits to Newport worth £271,626. This commitment is subject to Aldi receiving planning approval from Telford & Wrekin Council and is in addition to the multi-million pound investment a new store would bring to the area along with up to 35 new jobs.

Following meetings and feedback from local stakeholders and residents, Aldi is proposing to contribute funds for highway improvements including sections of the A518 and A41, along with a new bus stop and shelter for shoppers, employees and the local community. A contribution will also be made to Newport Town Team to fund the role of the town centre manager to support community initiatives.

In addition, Nova FM, Newport’s community radio station run by volunteers, would receive a contribution from Aldi to provide new equipment and fund their FM licence to ensure the station can continue to operate for a further three years. New destination signage will also be introduced to promote the historic market town of Newport; along with recycling bins for the town centre and one which would be located at the Aldi food store should they be granted planning permission.

A spokesman for Aldi said, ‘We want to introduce a new Aldi food store in Newport but it’s important to us that we are also good neighbours. It’s important that any funding which Aldi provides is for initiatives that will maintain and improve the town and will have tangible benefits for the local community.’

Aldi would like to encourage anyone who would like to know more about its proposal to introduce a food store in Newport, to contact the project team using the freephone information line 0800 298 7040. To view the full planning application visit Telford & Wrekin Council’s website, www.telford.gov.uk and use planning reference number: TWC/2013/0887.
