In early February 2014, Aldi pledged to give a financial contribution to the Newport Town Team and Nova FM. This contribution would form part of its planning obligation to deliver benefits to the Newport community through a Section 106 agreement specifically designated for public art and to enhance the vitality and viability of Newport Town Centre.
Telford and Wrekin Council, in response to Aldi’s proposal, stated that the Newport Town Team and Nova FM community radio station did not meet the relevant Community Infrastructure Levy tests and therefore not eligible to receive the funding.
A spokesman for Aldi said, ‘We’re disappointed that these two significant community initiatives aren’t eligible to receive this contribution through our planning obligations. However, as a gesture of goodwill, Aldi will honour its commitment to give £12,626 to Nova FM and £10,000 to the Newport Town Team if planning permission is given for the proposed store at Audley Avenue, Newport. This will be in addition to an amended financial contribution of £274,000 which will include a sum of £25,000 for public art that Aldi has already committed through the Section 106 agreement. ’
Aldi is now looking at alternative ways the £25,000 for ‘public art’ can be directed that will have a positive impact for the Newport community.
