Severn Hospice. 25 years of caring for local people

Author | 14 May 2014

Severn Hospice has been providing care and support to people in Shropshire with terminal illnesses for a quarter of a century. Since we first opened our doors to patients in July 1989, hundreds of people from Newport have been looked after by our caring teams. As the number of local people who rely on our specialist care has grown, our hospice has always actively looked to expand and adapt our services to meet the demand.

One of the major changes over the last 10 years has been the development of our home and community-based hospice care. People often think of a hospice as a building, with care which is confined by four walls. While it is true we have hospice buildings where patients and their loved ones come to receive support, the majority of people we help are in the community.

In 2013, 106 patients from Newport benefitted from the care provided by these community teams. From the very early days in our hospice’s history, the people of Newport have shown unwavering commitment to our cause. In March 1988 - more than a year before we started caring for patients - we opened our first Severn Hospice shop located in High Street, Newport.

Last year our Newport shop underwent a major refurbishment to create a much-improved shopping environment. Our loyal customers have helped Newport shop thrive for over 26 years. The people of Newport were responsible for setting up one of our very first community support groups, raising much-needed funds to help pay for our hospice’s services which are free of charge for all our patients. Newport Support Group was founded in October 1987 and donated more than £2,700 in its first year of fundraising in 1988. Since then it has gone onto raise thousands of pounds towards ensuring our care continues for local families who need it. The Newport 100 Club has been running a raffle in aid of Severn Hospice since the early 1990s which raises around £900 every year.

The enthusiasm and generosity shown by the people of Newport for Severn Hospice continues today. Newport residents gave an amazing £48,000 to help our cause last year alone. This fantastic amount could pay for more than 6,000 hours of nursing care for our patients and their families. On behalf of all of those we care for we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the people of Newport for the continued kindness and generosity they have shown towards Severn Hospice since our fledgling years.
