Newport Library to become UKOnline Centre

Author | 20 May 2014

From Monday 19 May three libraries in the borough are set to become UKOnline Centres, providing more learning opportunities for people.

As UKOnline Centres, Wellington, Madeley and Newport libraries will be able to offer support to people who have some basic computer skills but want to learn a little more. Basic skills include knowing how to use the keyboard and mouse and being able to search the internet.

The UKOnline Centre accredited libraries will be able to offer the Learn My Way website which will enable users to set up an account, follow modules and exercises online and keep track of an individuals learning.

By following this course users will be able to discover more about keeping safe online, job searching, online forms, online banking and shopping, social media and much more. The course lets each person learn at their own pace independently and helps to build more confidence using computers. It’s free for all library members, and being an online course means users are not restricted if they wish to continue their learning outside of the library on computers at home.

Becoming UKOnline Centres from Monday also ties in with the national ‘Festival of Learning’ which runs through May and June and encourages people to discover something new and celebrate the transformational power of learning. Taking part in the Learn My Way course could just be the perfect opportunity to discover and learn something new.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Customer Services, Libraries and Transport, said: “Having three of our libraries become UKOnline Centres means we will be able to offer even more to library users. “As I’ve said before, a library is much more than a place to borrow books, and we are continually working on providing new services and enhancing existing services to meet the needs of everyone in the borough.”

To take part in the course ask any member of staff at Newport library for an introductory booklet and the Centre Code to register for free at www.leanrmyway.com.

For more information on the course or any other services call the library direct, Newport 01952 382965.
