In January 2020, local girl Georgia Thorne will be taking part in an International Citizenship Service (ICS) placement in Machakos, Kenya. Working with the charity Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), she will spend 3 months fully immersed within the local community, living and working with the local citizens. VSO’s mission is to bring people together to address marginalisation and poverty and for Georgia’s placement the focus will be on an Empowered Youth for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise (EYEE) project. This will target vulnerable young people (15-29 year olds), helping them to gain key skills, to access employment opportunities and to encourage them to realise their aspirations. Located in a community where 61% of people live in poverty, Georgia is most looking forward to leaving a legacy of positive change and knowing that her hard work has empowered the lives of those in need.
Before her departure, Georgia has been challenged to fundraise £1,500 to show her commitment to VSO, where every penny raised goes directly to the incredible work of the charity. As well as committing to a half marathon in January, Georgia is raffling off two hampers around Newport for £1 a ticket and would be extremely grateful for the support of the people of Newport to help her reach her fundraising target.
