All About Newport

People were, of course, reluctant to do so and were quite aghast that such a proposition should be put to them. He asked them why. How do we know what you’re going to do with it? Is it going to be safe? I’m not sure I can trust you with my car! His reply was: “You’re not sure you can trust me with your car for 6 hours and yet you hand over your most precious possession of all into the hands of people you don’t really know for 180 days a year!” I often recount this experience when I speak to new parents. As a school, we never underestimate the amount of trust which they place in us when handing over their children at the start of the day so it is essential that our standards of care, support, guidance and teaching are the best they can possibly be. In our large and vibrant school community, there are now almost 410 children. Although I have only been the headteacher since last year, I have taught at Muxton for many years and seen many changes, including the increase in size over the last couple of years. We are determined that our school will still retain its identity as a primary school and whilst we initiate and embrace many changes, there are still the core, fundamental values of primary school education which we strive to maintain. All schools are now required to demonstrate how they are preparing children for life ahead in modern Britain. What we do know is that this will be a diverse and fast-paced world but there are many things we don’t know about the future and for which we can’t fully prepare children. My early experiences of computers could never have prepared me for a career in IT yet one of my primary school contemporaries manages a large and successful web-design business. How did he do this? He was obviously a lot more inspired than I was by the repetitive, monotone beep across the screen of the BBC computer but I know Muxton Primary School I once attended a conference where the keynote speaker approached several members of the audience at the start of the day and asked them to hand over their car keys for the duration of the day. Each child belongs to one of four houses (inset right). This “promotes a strong sense of belonging and teamwork throughout school ” explains Headteacher Jenny Pritchard 28 DECEMBER 2015
