There had always been a main route across the marshes and pools of the

Newport area via the bridge which still survives. The route was significant, it

was from London to Chester, and from there to Ireland. The bridge in the centre

of town was so important that a charity called the Bridge Trust was created to

maintain it. From the 18th century turnpike trusts mained the roads into and

out of Newport, and travellers had to pay to use these roads at that time.

Newport was a stopping off point for coaches, carts and travellers along this

main road. Hence, many inns and other appropriate trades were attracted to

Newport – blacksmiths, coach makers, hostelries and posting houses to supply

horses, to name but a few.
