Edgmond and Tibberton triumph in

tag rugby schools competition

Hundreds of youngsters descended on Newport Rugby Club to take part in

tag rugby competitions for primary schools across Telford & Wrekin.

The club hosted two separate challenges - one for

pupils in years three and four, and another forthose

in years five and six. In total, the two events involved

33 teams.

It was

Tibberton Primary School

which won the

year three and four competition, with the team

topping their initial qualifying group and going on to

complete the competition undefeated.

The year five and six competition went down to the

wire, with

St Peter’s Primary at Edgmond

beating

Muxton Primary 10-9 on a ‘golden try’ after the teams

had finished tied in the final at the end of normal

time.

A total of 14 schools took part in the year three and

four competition – including three newcomers -

Woodlands, Hadley and Windmill schools. A further

19 schools were involved in the year five and six

competition, which involved more than 200 pupils.

In the plate competition, for teams which failed to

qualify from the initial group stages in the year five

and six competition,

St Peter & Paul Primary from

Newport

beat Short Wood of Wellington in the final,

with John Fletcher andCoalbrookdale finishing joint

third.

The William Reynolds School team from Woodside

were awarded the Fair Play Award for what organisers

described as ‘their superb sportsmanship throughout

the tournament’.

Refereeingwas provided by volunteers fromNewport

Rugby Club and young leaders from the Burton

Borough and Charlton Schools. Wrekin College also

helped with the years five and six event.

The events were organised by the Telford & Wrekin

School Sports Partnership. Manager Frankie Williams

said: “It was great to see so many schools taking part,

bringing quality and enthusiasm to the competition.

“It would be great if these and more new schools

were involved in the future. Young people wishing to

participate further in rugby union can do so at either

Newport Rugby Club or Telford Hornets.”

He also said a big thank-you to referees.“They worked

tirelessly throughout the day and in the run-up to the

competition to ensure the event ran smoothly.”

Tag rugby is just one of the sports involved in the

2016 Winter Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival

which will be held from March 1-2 at Shrewsbury

Sports Village.

The festival is organised by Energize Shropshire,

Telford & Wrekin which promotes and celebrates

sport and physical activity. Nearly 2,000 primary

and secondary pupils will be competing, across 25

different events.

Harry Cade, Youth Sport Manager at Energize,

said: “These tag rugby competitions form part of a

programme of activities delivered by School Sports

Partnerships and School Games organisers, and

aredesigned to engage more young people to enjoy,

watch and play sport and lead a lifelong healthy

lifestyle.”
