Ski season, means knee season!

By Anna Simons MCSP - Chartered Physiotherapist

Whilst great fun, the speed of

movement and unpredictability of

the environment makes skiing a

potentially dangerous activity. So

with our ankles protected tightly

bound into rigid boots and a

helmet to protect our heads it

is often our knees that take the

brunt of any falls or collisions.

In

fact knee injuries account for 30%

to 40% of ALL skiing injuries!

Our body position, (crouching with knees

semi flexed) change of direction and speed all

make the knee vulnerable to injury from sheering

and twisting forces.

Common injuries include; Partial tear or ruptures of

the Anterior Cruciate ligament- ACL, Partial tear or

rupture of the Posterior Cruciate ligament-PCL.

Tears or nicks in the meniscus (cartilage),

dislocation or injury to the Patella

(knee cap), bruising or haematomas

on the quadriceps or hamstrings

from collisions.

All of these result can in; Pain,

Swelling (can come on fast and

be severe), Decreased range of

movement, Instability or Limping

Gait.

But don’t panic, help is at hand

.

Physiotherapy has many treatments to

expedite a full and speedy recovery. With first line

treatments like ice in elevation with compression,

Ultrasound, Strapping, Massage to name but a few.

So, if you’ve injured your knee skiing or anything

else give me a

call for friendly professional advice

and I’ll get you back on track.
