

Sporting stars to inspire young people
A group of Shropshire sporting stars are seeking to inspire
young people by taking part in an exciting educational initiative for
local schools and youth groups.
The stars, who have all competed at the highest level,
are part of the
Champion Programme
organised by
Energize, the sports partnership for
Shropshire and
Telford &Wrekin
.
The aim of the scheme is to deliver motivational
messages to local youngsters from people who have
‘been there and done it’ by competing at the top
level, with the world’s best.
“This is not just about sport – our Champion
Programme is aimed at giving young people the
inspiration to succeed at whatever they do,”explained
Energize chief executive Chris Child.
The
Magnificent Seven
are:
•
Alison Williamson MBE
- Britain’s leading archer
and veteran of six Olympic Games, winning Olympic,
World and Commonwealth medals.
•
Danielle Brown MBE
- A double Paralympic gold
medallist, three times World Champion and multiple
world record holding archer, from Telford.
•
Kelly Edwards
- Born in Telford, she competed for
Great Britain in Judo at the London 2012 Olympic
Games and for England at the 2014 Commonwealth
Games, winning a silver medal.
•
Bethan Partridge
- Athlete and high jumper, from
Bridgnorth, who was selected to represent England
at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
•
Mel Clarke
- Overcame adversity to represent
England at Paralympic archery, winning bronze at
Beijing 2008 and silver at London 2012.
•
Kelda Wood
- Brim-full of enthusiasm having
seen first-hand the benefits personally of sport
rehabilitation, shehas her sights set on para-canoeing
for Team GB at Rio 2016.
•
Finn McCann
- An athlete specialising in a wide
range of mountain sports including rock climbing,
speedflying, slacklining and alpine mountaineering.
The Champion Programme has its origins back in
2013 when archer Alison Williamson, who grew up in
Church Stretton, joined forces with Energize to help
spread the London 2012 legacy.
Alison said: “I am very excited to be working with
Energize to promote this campaign. We hope we can
inspire the next generation to get involved in sport
and help to fulfil the dreams of young people.”
The Champion Programme promotes positive and
active lifestyle messages which dovetail with other
Energize initiatives such as Sportivatewhich is
designed
to help 14-25 year olds become more active
.
