A group of astronauts exploring the red planet are
caught up in a fierce storm. Believing that one of their
explorers, Mark Watney (Matt Damon), has perished in
the storm, the crew blast off from Mars, leaving him
behind.
Essentially a one-man show, the astronaut film is
actually an exploration of another kind. It explores how
the human spirit can react in such harsh conditions.
With little in the way of supplies, the stranded Watney
must utilise his skills ind ingenuity to find a way to
survive on the hostile world.
Back on Earth, members of NASA are working with
international scientists to find a way to bring him
home, and as they do his crew mates are hatching
their own plan for a rescue mission.
Based on the novel by Andy Weir, The Martian is
a fantastic piece of cinema, directed by the ever-
dependable Ridley Scott.
It blends hope over adversity with a nail biting story
that keeps throwing curved balls at Damon, who by

the way turns in a great performance. Definitely worth
spending a bit of your left over Christmas money on.
Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels are
among the supporting cast.
