Pet weight - Management of cats,

dogs and rabbits

Tern Vets, explain the importance of watching your pets weight.

Weight gain can sometimes

be a result of feeding an

increased quantity of food

and commonly the feeding of

human foods and treats that

are high in calorie content.

Animals that have been

neutered have a tendency to

gain weight over time and

animals in their senior years

tend to exercise less. At Tern

Veterinary group we offer a

free weight check for your pet

to discuss your pets individual

food and exercise requirements

and aim to support you

during the process of weight

management.

The benefits of weight loss

can increase energy levels,

promote the mobility of joints and sometimes reduce

the frequency and administration of anti arthritic

medications. Weight loss in overweight animals

promotes a healthy heart

and enhances the length and

quality of their life.

Alternatively, animals that have

a low body weight perhaps

due to a period of illness, would

require assessment to identify

the exact cause of the weight

loss and may, if appropriate be

fed highly palatable condensed

calories to enable them to gain

weight.

If you would like to discuss your

pets individual requirement or

find out more please phone

the surgery for advice and book

a weight clinic appointment

with a practice nurse

There are several medical

conditions that may cause weight gain or sudden

unexplainedweight loss andasVeterinaryprofessionals

we would always assess your pet individually to

identify the most possible cause.
