The Schwalbe Tyres UK Newport Nocturne’s tradition of awarding the men’s winner their weight in beer, measured on huge scales, has always been a favourite with fans and riders alike, but this year is going to be different!
With Wood’s brewery taking over sponsorship of the award, they’ve decided it’s time to treat the ladies too! So, the winner of the Ludgate Finance Women’s Nocturne will receive her weight in beer as well!
As brewers of Shropshire Lad and Shropshire Lass beers, Wood’s have got the ideal prize for both the men’s and women’s races.
Diane Jeggo, one of the event organisers said “We’re delighted that Wood’s are on board with the Newport Nocturne and to present to both the men’s and women’s winners is a great idea. We first made the giant scales back in 2001. It was supposed to be a one-off, but everyone loved it so much we’ve had to carry it on. It’s nice to be able to add something more for this edition of the race”
The Nocturne was Britain’s first floodlit bike race and has featured cycling stars such as this year’s Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, Sean Kelly, Mark Cavendish and David Millar. The free event regularly attracts over 10,000 spectators.
Wood’s are a cask ale brewery in the tiny village of Wistanstow, Shropshire near the small town of Craven Arms, which itself is close to the larger market town of Ludlow. Wood’s beer is well know across the county and this summer the brewery are on a quest to find THE Shropshire Lad and Lass.
