Newport Town Council-Beacon Lighting Event

02 June 2022 - Newport Shropshire

what's happening on the day

Residents in Newport are invited to the lighting of a beacon on Thursday 2nd June as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

More than 1500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom and Commonwealth in a co-ordinated tribute to mark Her Majesty’s historic 70 year reign and Newport Town Council is delighted to be hosting one of the official events.

Sheila Atkinson, Newport Town Clerk, said “We are honoured to be working with Bruno Peek, Pageantmaster of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons, to ensure the Town forms part of the Beacon chain to mark this historic occasion. The Beacon itself will be lit at 9.45pm at the top of St Nicholas’ Church Tower so it will be visible to residents across Newport and surrounding areas.

We will be following the national timetable for the event which starts with Newport’s Town Crier, Peter Taunton, undertaking the formal Proclamation to announce the Beacon lighting on Newport High Street at 2pm.

The Beacon lighting event will start around 8.45pm at St Nicholas Church grounds with entertainment provided by the Military Wives Choir and the Shropshire Bagpiper. The beacon lighting will be announced by the Piper playing “Diu Regnare”, a tune specially written for the occasion by the Pipe Major of the Inverary District Pipe Band followed by a Bugler playing the Bugle Call “Majesty.” At exactly 9.45pm the Beacon will be lit by Lieutenant Colonel (ret) Ian Sawers, Deputy Lord Lt. of Shropshire, whilst the National Anthem is sung by the Choir.

We are hoping as many residents as possible will be able to attend the event to join the celebrations.”
To enable residents to gather around the Church for the event the surrounding roads will be closed to traffic from 8.45pm to 10.45pm.

The weekends celebrations will continue in Newport with residents being invited to bring a picnic for a Big Jubilee Lunch celebration on Newport High street on Sunday 5th June.
