Newport’s Elite In Las Vegas

Author | 11 June 2019

Saturday 8th one of Newports Elite runners, Robin Guy took the long plane journey over to Las Vegas, USA to take part in a doughnut inspired 'Glazed and Confused 5k' of which Robin came in at 3rd place in a time of 17:28. One of the perks of the race was doughnuts at the finish line.

The weekend of the 8th June saw runners and walkers travel to the Cotswolds to take part in Race To The Tower, the first event of the Threshold Trail Series. Newport’s Ellen Deighton travelled down to take on the double marathon and opted for the non-stop option, starting near Stroud and running 53 hilly miles along the Cotswold Way to finish at Broadway Tower. Despite wet weather in the week leading up to the race, and on the morning itself, the rain stopped 5 minutes before the race started and held off all day, leaving the runners with almost perfect weather conditions, although some mud underfoot. Ellen finished the race in 14 hours and 16 minutes, which was a considerable personal best time for this distance.

On Sunday 9th Amy Hughes took part in the Cotswolds 113 Middle Distance Triathlon at Ashton Keynes Waterpark which involved a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle ride and 13.1 mile half marathon run, completing the total course in 6 hours, 18 minutes and 19 seconds. Amy says after the event "I was really pleased with my bike time, averaging over 17mph, but paid for it on the run! It is a lovely race with very flat bike and run courses and a nice lake swim."

Sunday also saw the Welsh Castle Relays which was basically a relay race from Caernarfon to Cardiff divided into sections. Jennie Waters took up the 9.4 miles stage between Harlech and Barmouth (That started off with a category 5 climb) in 1:22:58. There was a very very competitive turn out so she was very pleased not to finish last and was well within the stage cut off. Jennie tells us "It was an amazing experience, challenging but beautiful and the support was incredible."
