Last Thursday evening, Newport was represented by four teams of 3 runners at the 8th running of the annual Alderford relays. This event, consisting of 3 legs of just under 2 miles each, took in the scenic lakeside views of Alderford Lake (formerly Dearnford Lake) just outside Whitchurch, and was organised by the Whitchurch Whippets running club. For most people present, it was the first time running one of these events with an actual baton (which contained the timing chip), which added a new aspect to the event.
Newport’s first team back were Ian Vann (14 minutes, 31 seconds), Joanne Lutner (16:04) and Gary Mountford (13:00), who got the baton round in 43:34, and finished 49th overall, out of 117 teams who made it to the finish on the night. Next back, in 58th place, were Darren Hesbrook-Edwards (14:10), Donna Hesbrook-Edwards (17:59) and Neil Fairbrother (13:27), who completed the course in 45:36. Just behind them were Steve Cannon (16:13), Simon Yap (13:59) & Ralph Humphries (15:42), taking 60th spot in 45:54. Oliver Stokes (16:50), John Stokes (19:51) & Neil Jones (13:40) finished in 85th place, with an overall time of 50:22).
