Student council members visit Newport Town Council`

Author | 04 March 2025

Newly-elected members of the student council at Burton Borough School have met with Newport Town Council for a fact-finding tour and discussion.

President Alexander Bevington-King, vice president Freya Dunbar, communications officer Harry Delmanso, wellbeing officer Joe Paginton, diversity officer Kamari Rawlings, and charities officers Eleanor McGuire and Poppy Richards visited the council’s offices.

Town clerk Jo Reay gave the group a guided tour of the Guildhall and provided them with valuable insights into the workings of local government and its role in the community.

The students, from years 7-11, were accompanied by assistant head Karen Heins, and democracy lead Jodi Beaver.

The school said the visit marked an important step in fostering a deeper understanding of civic engagement and the democratic process among the student council members.

Principal Caroline Bedford said: "It an invaluable experience, providing them with a deeper understanding of local governance and the important role they can play in their community.

“I’m proud to see our students engaging so thoughtfully with the democratic process, and I believe this visit will inspire them to make a positive impact in our school and beyond.”

Jodi Beaver added: “The students were warmly welcomed and enjoyed an extensive and very interesting tour – including information relating to the history of the building which has been used since the 1400s, how budgets are decided and how projects are run by the Town Council.

“The town clerk was delighted to answer any questions that the students had, and we are so grateful for this opportunity."

Jo Reay said: "It was an absolute pleasure to host Burton Borough School at the Guildhall. They were a lovely enthusiastic group and I’m sure they will do the school proud."
