Horizon Dairy Vets to host industry day tackling calf pneumonia at Harper Adams
University: "One cough is too much!" A free event at Harper Adams Future Farm brings farmers together with animal health experts to explore a prevention-first approach to Bovine Respiratory Disease.
Horizon Dairy Vets (HDV), based in Whitchurch, Shropshire, will host a free industry day dedicated to Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) prevention and management. The event runs on Friday 28 August 2026, at Harper Adams Farm, Newport, TF10 8NA, from 10am to 2pm.
Titled "One cough is too much!", the event brings farmers, vets, and industry specialists together to look at the management choices which affect BRD, and the practical steps and approaches that reduce the risk.
The day is structured around three short, focused sessions rather than a single long lecture, each pairing a practical demonstration with time for farmer questions:
• qTUS lung-scanning demonstration: a hands-on look at ultrasound scanning as an early-detection and monitoring tool, led by the HDV team.
• Behaviour and management: how individual, pair, and group housing affect calf behaviour and disease risk, presented by Boehringer Ingelheim.
• Calf environment: practical guidance on the environmental factors that most influence respiratory health, presented by Galebreaker.
The event closes with a tour of Harper Adams Farm and an informal hog roast, where attendees can talk directly with the HDV team and event partners.
"Lung scanning is a tool in the toolbox, not the answer on its own," said European specialist Hannah Fitzsimmonds. “Early detection matters, but the bigger opportunity is to adapt management systems, and eradicate root causes. If a farmer leaves today thinking 'I need help with this, or ‘I haven’t thought about that before’, then we've done our job.”
