At Burton Borough School in Newport, the future belongs to all: the community, the staff - but most of all to our students. In June 2015, students will use our School’s £8 million new building for the first time.
As part of the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme, it will ensure that Burton Borough builds on our recent growth and success: in 2014, 61% of students achieved the Government’s 5 A* to C benchmark. This meant that Burton Borough is amongst the very highest-attaining comprehensive schools in Telford and Wrekin and once again well above the national averages. All this in an extremely challenging setting of well documented national changes to examinations, some of which were imposed on our teachers and students midway through their GCSE courses. These came as little surprise to the School as the hard work and dedication of staff and students has created an ethos of excellence where exam results have improved in seven of the last eight years.
The Burton Borough School is no ‘exam factory’ however. We pride ourselves on encouraging the development of young people to become well-rounded citizens who will cope with, and thrive in, this ever-changing world. High on our agenda is the promotion of a strong sense of morals where everyone is treated with respect, regardless of their background or culture. This inclusive attitude is central to our values at Burton Borough School, as is the pursuit of excellence.
Performing Arts at the school is nationally recognised. If you were privileged enough to see our summer production of ‘Footloose’ you know. We are now casting for our next production of ‘Grease’. As you can imagine 100s of students are auditioning for the lead parts in this exciting production.
In the spring of 2014 the shovel finally struck the turf for the very first time to mark the start of the construction work that will continue for over a year and will result in the completion of our new £8 million school building. Opening ready for the new school year in September 2015, the building will incorporate 90% of the learning that will take place at the school. It will be the new home for Science, Technology, Art, Humanities, English and Modern Foreign Languages Learning Areas and also incorporate a new Learning Resource centre. The vision has been shared with students, parents and Staff. If you visit the school you cannot fail to see the plethora of plans and artistic impressions of the new building. New school buildings are a world away from our current traditional 1950s and 1960s and 70s buildings with the emphasis more on ‘learning spaces’ rather than ‘teaching spaces’. The feel is far less claustrophobic with a mixture of more traditional classrooms alongside open learning spaces, galleries and ‘show and tell’ areas.
In the last few weeks we have been inducting our new year 7 into life at Burton Borough. Spaces in year 7 were at a premium this year. We are bucking the trend in many secondary schools by significantly increasing our number on roll for our new cohort- we have 60 more students in Year 7 compared with 2013. Quality teaching, strong partnerships and an exciting vision for where we see Burton Borough School in the future have encouraged parents to send their children here.
The construction of our new learning building is taking shape remarkably quickly- the ‘shell’ of the building itself has already been constructed - Year 6 and in particularly year 5 across our cluster are the young people whom will arguably see the greatest benefit of this new wonderful learning space. For them the their first day at school will coincide with a massive move forward for all at Burton Borough School.
