One of Newport’s best kept secrets hidden away, masquerading as somebody’s home in the peaceful and serene village of Church Aston.

The school was built in 1840 and has been led through the changes in education by many Head teachers. The current Head teacher, Mrs Sue Cusack, was appointed in 2013 having taught at the school for many years before her appointment.

She is well supported by a strong Governing Body in leading the school through the current changes and making the school a stimulating place for children to learn.

Church Aston Infant School was described recently by a past parent as ‘the most amazing little infant school’. It’s true, it is the smallest infant school in Telford and Wrekin and when full has capacity for only sixty pupils and equally true is that it is amazing.

As well as children from Church Aston and Newport, children travel from far afield to come to this little school. We aim to help them feel part of its special community very quickly. The oldest children in the school help the youngest settle into school life and the staff work hard to make this part of the children’s learning journey be very special and memorable.

Being a small school leads to a great number of benefits for everyone in the school. It enables the school to carry out its commitment to the provision of an outstanding educational experience for each and every pupil. Every child is able to be recognised as an individual and well known to every member of staff working at the school.

We all believe that children should feel happy and secure and a main aim is, therefore, to provide a safe, caring and friendly atmosphere for learning which meets the needs of every child. Starting school aged four; the children grow and flourish in the caring and friendly environment. Resources recently purchased for the school have developed opportunities for the children to learn to work and play together.

The school staff actively encourage a partnership between home and school having confidence that this will have a direct impact on the children’s learning. Recent activities this year have explored the idea of children working with their parents on projects in order to prepare the children for the work in the classroom. A fantastic amount of work and enthusiasm has been generated and the resulting work in school has extended the children’s knowledge even further.

We believe that every child should have an opportunity to follow a curriculum that is child centred, specific to the needs of them and takes account of their previous experiences. It is important that we allow the individuality of the childrento develop and enable each child to develop their creativity and full potential through guidance.

Being part of the community of Church Aston is extremely important for the school. A Table Top Sale run by the Friends of the School is held on the second Sunday every month in Church Aston Village Hall. The money raised has been used to pay for theatre trips, resources for the playground and developing the front of school.

The local environment of Church Aston provides an immense range of curriculum activities; St. Andrew’s Church is a stimulus for much learning and provides a meaningful setting for the school’s Christmas and Easter celebrations. The classes enjoy walks to the Mere and the park for Geography and Science activities. We consider it vital for each child to explore the world about him or her and to make sense of the world they live in.

The school believes strongly in developing the global dimension and enhancing the life experiences for the children by developing their understanding of language, cultures and knowledge of places in the world. The oldest children in the school have the opportunity to learn French and all classes regularly find out about how children of their age live and learn across the world.

More information about Church Aston Infant School can be found on the school website, www.churchastoninfantschool.co.uk. This shows how the children learn together through a range of activities in a caring and inclusive environment.
