Telford & Wrekin Libraries is reaching out to local people to increase volunteer numbers, especially in the Newport area. Volunteers are needed in Newport who can share their IT knowledge with people who need help with computer skills, from people who are complete beginners to people who need to improve their basic skills.
This one-to-one help is invaluable to people who need to build some confidence to use a computer and it’s a service very much in demand in libraries throughout the borough. IT volunteers at Newport Library don’t need qualifications or to be an expert, just to be a regular computer user.
The most important and valued skill is to enjoy helping people. Senior librarian Helen Nahal said: “We are keen to increase the number of IT volunteers in our libraries, particularly in Newport.
“Having computer skills is so important now, and just learning the basics or improving basic skills can give someone much greater confidence and open up so many opportunities such as being able to search for jobs online, use social media sites and communications channels to keep in touch with distant family and friends or do online grocery shopping which can be so important for people without transport.
“I would urge anyone with an interest in helping people with a good general knowledge of using computers to get in touch and speak to someone about becoming an IT volunteers; whether you have a lot of time to spare or just an hour here and there, we want to hear from you.”
