The Shropshire Astronomical Society (SAS) is a county-wide group for anyone interested in astronomy, star-gazing or space exploration. If you are interested in astronomy, then you will find a warm welcome in the SAS. It‘s always nice to meet other people who appreciate the quiet beauty of a dark and clear sky. We don‘t expect any prior knowledge of Astronomy - our members range all the way from complete beginners to highly accomplished astro-imagers whose images have been published nationally.
Our main observing sessions are held on the third Saturday of every month at Rodington Village Hall SY4 4QX. If the sky is cloudy, there will be a local speaker, with wide-ranging topics such as astrophotography, binocular observing, space probes, asteroid collisions and CCD imaging and more.
The Society promotes an annual Showcase Lecture in the Autumn by a distinguished speaker. This year‘s Speaker will be Pete Lawrence, a regular presenter on ‘The Sky at Night‘ and will be at Meole Brace School Science College Shrewsbury, 8.00pm, Friday 23rd October 2015. We also organise trips to sites of astronomical interest, such as Jodrell Bank and Keele Observatory and do a considerable amount of outreach activity with local schools, scouts, guides.
