Burton Borough School in Newport has emerged as the most improved secondary school across Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire for English and maths achievement.
The school says the results in newly released performance data reflects sustained hard work from students and staff, support from families, and a wholeschool commitment to raising aspirations.
Burton Borough recorded the largest rise of any secondary school in the county for ‘Attainment 8’, which measures the average academic achievement of pupils across eight designated GCSE-level qualifications.
The school also saw the biggest improvement in the percentage of students securing grade four or above in both English and maths, rising by 8.4%. At grade five and above, outcomes climbed by 7.5%, again placing the school among the strongest improvers locally.
Performance across the broader curriculum also strengthened significantly, with the English Baccalaureate average point score showing the highest improvement across all comparison schools.
Principal Caroline Bedford said: “I am incredibly proud of our students. Their determination, resilience and ambition have shone through, and these results are a testament to what they can achieve when they truly believe in themselves.
“These gains were achieved across the entire cohort, demonstrating consistent progress for students of all abilities.
“This success belongs to every member of our staff. Their unwavering commitment, care and expertise have transformed outcomes across the school.
“Burton Borough is a community that lifts each other up, and these improvements show exactly what can happen when everyone works together with a shared purpose.”
She added: “We are delighted with this recognition, but we are not standing still. Our focus remains on providing exceptional teaching, a rich curriculum, and the very best opportunities for every young person who walks through our doors.”
