Podcast with global appeal gets local support

Author | 11 October 2021

Students who run a podcast that’s had global success will now benefit from the support of a Shropshire insurance broker. The team at Henshalls in Newport and Shrewsbury has agreed to sponsor pupils at Tettenhall Wood School in Wolverhampton – a school for children and young adults with autism.

Their TWS Sports Podcast provides students with the chance to develop key skills such as communication, confidence and social skills through weekly broadcasts.

Outreach teacher Adam Millichip said: “We interview famous sports people every week and have been lucky to speak to some amazing guests including Premier League footballers Jo Hart and Dave Edwards, Premier League referee Mark Halsey, Rugby World Cup winners Will Greenwood, Jamie Noon and John Eales, and Ashes cricketers Matthew Hoggard, David Lloyd, Marnus Labuschagne, Mike Atherton, Steve Waugh and many more.

“Our podcast has quickly grown and we are now in the top three per cent most listened to podcasts of all podcasts worldwide which is an amazing achievement.

“And now we’ve been nominated for a Global Sports Podcast Award for the best Sports Podcast in the Social and Equality category too which is fantastic news.

“We are so grateful to Henshalls for their sponsorship support – all the money we receive goes straight to our students who decide what to do with the money in terms of advertising, and what merchandise we should sell.

“They are 100 per cent in charge of it which is great for their learning as it brings their learning into real life.”

Henshalls managing partner Mark Freeman said the firm was delighted to be working with the students.

“We’re always keen to work with community groups and organisations and the students have been doing an incredible job of producing such brilliant podcasts that we wanted to offer them our support.

“They have interviewed some extremely well-known sporting stars and it’s a great opportunity for the students to develop their skills while enjoying the experience of meeting new and interesting people at the same time.”
