It was a true privilege to join the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill Harper, and the teams from Untold Living and McPhillips for the recent Topping Out Ceremony at Newport's newest multi-million-pound retirement community. This ceremony marked a truly significant construction milestone for the project, soon to be known as Sundew Court.
As Chair of the Newport Chamber of Commerce, I was delighted to stand on the roof of one of the new apartment blocks alongside the project leaders. This £20 million development is not just a building site; it represents a vital investment in our community's future and prosperity.
The new community will feature 61 apartments and 16 bungalows, complete with a bistro, bar, and various amenities. This is a crucial development for Newport. As Deputy Mayor Councillor Harper rightly noted, this is a much-needed solution for our ageing population, providing secure, local housing options that allow our residents to remain close to family and the town they love.
The commitment shown by the Shropshire construction company, McPhillips, has been incredible. Their professional approach, including the use of Modern Methods of Construction to ensure efficient and timely delivery, is a testament to the high standards being set here.
We are proud to welcome Untold Living to Newport. Their vision—to create a place where retirees can live on their own terms, supported by kindness and surrounded by opportunity, aligns perfectly with the welcoming spirit of our town. The significant interest they are already seeing from their information centre confirms the demand for this integrated retirement community.
Sundew Court, located just off the A41, will not only provide essential housing but also create a new hub of activity and job opportunities. The Chamber fully supports projects that enhance the quality of life for our residents and contribute positively to our local economy.
We look forward to the community opening in late summer 2026 and becoming an active and valued member of the wider Newport community.
