Newport & District Swimming Club has enjoyed two successful weekends of racing, taking on tough competition and coming away with a strong set of results.
On 21 and 22 March, the team travelled to Sandwell Aquatics Club’s Spring into Regionals competition. Held at the 50m pool at Sandwell Aquatics Centre – the home of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games – the event attracted large city clubs and hundreds of swimmers.
Over the two days Newport swimmers achieved 43 personal bests (PBs) and won seven medals.
The following weekend (28 and 29 March), the team headed to Wolverhampton for the Chase Swimming Club Roebuck: Last Chance Regional Qualifier where the positive performances continued. Newport’s swimmers recorded an impressive 74 PBs, picking up 31 medals.
Head coach Claire Williams said: “Both were really tough competitions, but our swimmers gave it everything and put in some fantastic performances. As always, there was great support, plenty of team spirit and lots of laughs poolside. Well done to all our swimmers — we’re very proud of you.”
The impressive performances mean that four of the club’s swimmers have qualified to compete in the Swim England West Midlands Regional Championships at Sandwell Aquatics Centre from 25 April – 4 May.
Claire added: “While we are incredibly lucky to be able to train at Newport Swimming Pool, it is a small facility and our available sessions are limited. Our swimmers however train hard and, for many, this was their first time swimming in a 50m pool. Our performance just goes to show that you don’t need to be a big club to be successful – hard work and determination will get results.
“Training now continues towards the West Midlands Summer Regional Championships, with an exciting programme of events ahead this summer. Beyond that, our focus shifts to the autumn season and building towards the winter regional competition and securing the much sought-after qualifying times for the Shropshire County Championships that will take place in early 2027.”
